Save the Islamic Society Uganda (SISU) is a non-governmental organization based in Ndejje, Kampala. It was registered in 2013 and started to fully operate in 2014. Their focus areas are; education, welfare of the elderly and Islamic seminars. Their mission is to provide opportunities to the vulnerable groups of people.

SISU started shortly after a team of members performed charity by visiting the sick, visit people in villages and found out that most children were being neglected by their mothers because of their lack of capacity to sustain them and decided to register as SISU with focus on children in 2018. They started with 6 children and currently have 60 with the least age being 5years.

These children all go to schools with in Ndejje-Kanyanya. Initially, all the children stayed in one home but the number became big to be managed where chicken pox broke out and all the children were affected and treating them became hard which resulted into separation to another home, they currently have two branches.

why the orphanage?

  1. Residential Conditions:
    – Residential conditions of the residents of SISU orphanage are poor.
    – Physical structure of initial orphanage is very old, windows have no glasses, some rooms have no doors on. Boys’ dormitories have no glasses.
    – Girls have only two beds and the rest lay on the floor as boys share 6 double decker beds sleeping a pair per bed.
    – They have one latrine and a bathroom, no kitchen, they instead use open space to cook.
    – Sanitation and hygiene are also a problem since there is congestion in their dormitories.
    – Safety and security are a problem.

  2. Education services:
    – All the children go to schools but the distance from home to these schools is very far.
    – They are paying SHS 150,000-250,000 for primary and secondary but schools are expensive whereby they pay money for exams, lunch, and for every Saturday extra lessons.
    – Three children have got accidents so far on their way to school as they cross the roads.
    – School fees is still a big challenge with some children being requested to stay home while others go to school.

  3. Healthcare services:
This stands a big challenge for they entirely depend on donations for medical care.
On an annual basis, they spend not less than SHS 20,000,000 on medication of children.

  4. Staffing and well-being:
Nutrition is also lacking. They feed on posho and beans from month to month, year to year and can only change in case they have donations. They prepare food that leaves some children wanting and unsatisfied resulting into malnutrition. These children only get two meals per day.
Rent is a challenge as they pay 1,000,000 shillings per month followed by warning letters because they sometimes fail to pay on time.

Our Approach

Collaborations with charitable organizations and NGOs to volunteer, support and extend resources to SISU. With the available resources, I we donate clothes and food exclusive of posho and beans to these children since it is essential for their well-being and also given the fact, they are feeding on the same meal more frequently.

As Alwaasi Charity, we consider a scholastic materials campaign for these children as well as sponsorships for at least 25 children come next year.
As our long-term impact, we also consider mobilizing and fundraising on behalf of SISU to enable them build a permanent home to avoid living under pressure and unpleasant conditions.
