Persons with Disabilities Program

Program Overview

Inspired by the teachings of the Holy Quran and the charitable legacy of Prophet Mohammed, Al Waasi Charity’s Persons with Disabilities Program empowers individuals with disabilities in Uganda’s Muslim communities. Established in 2018, this program addresses the unique challenges faced by persons with disabilities through mobility aids, skill-building, and community inclusion initiatives, fostering independence and dignity.

Our Objectives

  • Enhance Mobility: Provide wheelchairs and assistive devices to improve access to education, healthcare, and community activities.
  • Promote Independence: Offer vocational and life skills training to enable individuals to contribute to their families and communities.
  • Foster Inclusion: Reduce stigma and improve accessibility in homes, schools, and mosques through community sensitization and infrastructure improvements.
  • Sustain Impact: Deliver transparent, donor-funded support to ensure long-term benefits for participants and their communities.

What We Do

  • Wheelchair Distribution: We supply durable, customized wheelchairs to individuals, enabling them to navigate their environments and engage in daily life.
  • Skill Development Workshops: Our training programs teach vocational skills, such as tailoring or crafting, and life skills to boost confidence and self-reliance.
  • Community Awareness Campaigns: We work with local Muslim leaders to educate communities, challenge stigma, and promote inclusive practices.
  • Accessibility Enhancements: We support modifications to public and private spaces, including ramps and accessible sanitation, to ensure equal participation.

Impact and Achievements

Since its inception, the Persons with Disabilities Program has made significant strides:

  • 50+ Wheelchairs Distributed: Individuals across multiple communities have gained mobility, enabling school attendance and social engagement.
  • Empowered Participants: Over 30 individuals have completed vocational training, with several launching small businesses or securing local jobs.
  • Inclusive Communities: Sensitization efforts have reached over 1,000 community members, fostering greater acceptance and support for persons with disabilities.
  • Faith-Based Inclusion: Accessibility improvements in mosques have enabled participants to join prayers and religious events, strengthening their spiritual connection.
